Renewable Energy Directive (REDII)

The revised Renewable Energy Directive (2018/2001/EU) contains definitions on Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) and renewables self-consumers. It entered into force in December 2018.

Directives are legislative acts that set out goals that all EU countries must achieve. However, it is up to the individual countries to devise their own laws on how to reach these goals. All member states had until 30 June 2021 to transpose the RED II rules into their national legislation, including the regulation of  renewable energy communities and (jointly acting) renewables self-consumers. The Directive also states that Member States shall put in place an enabling framework to promote and facilitate the development of renewables self-consumption and to promote and facilitate the development of renewable energy communities.

The directive is accessible under: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/HTML/?uri=CELEX:32018L2001&from=EN
