The Directive on common rules for the internal market for electricity (EU) 2019/944 entered into force in June 2019 and introduced relevant aspects on citizen energy communities and energy sharing in the electricity market.
Directives are legislative acts that set out goals which all EU countries must achieve. However, it is up to the individual countries to devise their own laws on how to reach these goals. All member states had until 31 December 2020 to transpose the EMD rules into their national legislation, including the regulation of citizen energy communities, (jointly acting) active costumers and aggregation.
