The EWS Elektrizitätswerke Schönau eG (since 2009 a registered cooperative) emerged from a citizens’ initiative which, after the Chernobyl reactor catastrophe on the 26th of April 1986, wanted to actively strive for an ecological energy supply itself for its region. In February 2020, the cooperative counts over 8,000 members and recently welcomed its 200,000th energy client (electricity and gas combined).
The overall purpose of the EWS is the economic promotion and support of its members through a secure and inexpensive supply of climate-friendly energy. The cooperative fulfills its purpose with special consideration of ecological aspects, in particular by promoting energy from regenerative generation and decentralized combined heat and power plants as well as the economical use of energy and drinking water. Its activities extend to generation, acquisition, transmission, distribution, and also trading of energy.
