Gourmets know the village of Schnifis in Vorarlberg, Austria for its cheese. Now the municipality has also developed a taste for an energy community. The alpine dairy and its photovoltaic roof system, built with citizen participation, are part of one of the first renewable energy communities in Austria. Their whey is converted into electricity in the biogas plant together with liquid manure from agriculture.
In addition, all municipal buildings, some other businesses and 30 private households participate. Some of the households contribute their own PV systems to the EEG – in other words, like the alpine dairy, they act as prosumers. After winning the Energy Globe Vorarlberg, “Schnüfner Strom” was also awarded the Energy Globe Austria 2021 in the category “Sustainable Community”.
