After the liberalization of the European electricity market in 1998, Greenpeace e. V. was looking for an energy supplier that meets the strict green electricity criteria of the environmental organization. This is because tens of thousands of people, prompted by Greenpeace’s “Stromwechsel” campaign, have declared that they want to switch to a green electricity supplier. But the search remains in vain – no one can supply electricity that meets the Greenpeace criteria. Greenpeace then decided to tackle the task itself. On 27 October 1999, Greenpeace Energy eG was founded, and in January 2000, business started with the first 186 customers. The young company starts with a solid business plan even if the working circumstances seem a little chaotic at the beginning. From the very beginning, Greenpeace Energy is not only concerned with supplying green electricity, but also with building new plants to expand the supply of clean energy. In September 2021, the energy cooperative will be renamed Green Planet Energy.
